This section directs the Under Secretary of Commerce for Oceans and Atmosphere to identify and support research enabling a consistent, Federal set of forward-looking long-term meteorological information that models future extreme weather events, other environmental trends, projections, and observations. The Director of the National Institute of Standards and Technology, in consultation with the Under Secretary, shall make the information publicly available, identify related Federal and non-Federal standards efforts, and provide technical assistance to organizations developing standards, model building codes, and voluntary certifications so they may incorporate the information. The Director shall carry out these functions through the Fire Research Center and the National Windstorm Impact Reduction Program. The Director of the Office of Science and Technology Policy, in coordination with the United States Global Change Research Program and the Mitigation Framework Leadership Group, shall designate an interagency working group to support the required research and information development.
