S. 56 — SAP Act

This section extends authorization of appropriations for the Acer Access and Development Program—competitive grants to states, tribal governments, and research institutions to promote the domestic maple syrup industry through research and education, natural resource sustainability, market promotion, and encouragement of maple-sugaring (i.e., sap collection from Acer trees for boiling into food) on private lands—to $20 million annually through FY2030 (from FY2023) and establishes a consultation process. Under the new process, beginning with the first request for grant applications occurring at least one year after enactment of the SAP Act, the Secretary of Agriculture must solicit input from maple industry stakeholders on research and education priorities not later than six months before the request and consider that input when awarding grants.
