S. 602 — Wildfire Resilience Through Grazing Research Act

This section adds grazing for wildfire mitigation as a high-priority research and extension area eligible for competitive grants under the specialized research and extension grants program (7 U.S.C. 5925(d)). The new provision authorizes grants to land-grant institutions (i.e., 1862 Institutions, 1890 Institutions, or 1994 Institutions) to support (1) research and development of ungulate grazing land management techniques that promote wildfire mitigation, fuel reduction, and post-fire recovery on public and private lands—including techniques compatible with environmental protections (e.g., rotational grazing, managed stocking rates, riparian buffers) and that improve soil health—and to study related economic benefits and social support; and (2) information dissemination and outreach to public and private landowners, land managers, and livestock owners.
