S. 911 — Chief Herbert D. Proffitt Act of 2025

This section expands the Public Safety Officers' Benefits (PSOB) program to cover retired law enforcement officers who die or become permanently and totally disabled as the direct and proximate result of a personal injury from a targeted attack due to the officer's prior service. (A retired law enforcement officer is an individual who separated from service in good standing from a public agency as a law enforcement officer, with or without compensation; the PSOB program provides a $250,000 benefit, adjusted for inflation, to eligible public safety officers or their survivors.) The provision applies retroactively to incidents on or after January 1, 2012, including any pending claims before the Bureau of Justice Assistance.
