This section expresses the sense of the Senate supporting the designation of Malnutrition Awareness Week and recognizing (1) registered dietitian nutritionists, other nutrition professionals, health care providers, school food service workers, home-delivered meal providers, social workers, advocates, caregivers, and related agencies for advancing malnutrition awareness, treatment, and prevention; (2) the role of federal nutrition programs under the Older Americans Act and child nutrition programs in combating malnutrition, and supports increased funding for such programs; (3) community-based organizations, food banks, faith-based organizations, and local agencies, and the need for their partnerships with health care providers in underserved areas; (4) medical nutrition therapy under Medicare and the need for vulnerable populations' access to nutrition counseling; (5) National Institutes of Health research on nutrition, dietary patterns, the human gastrointestinal microbiome, and their influence on chronic disease prevention; and (6) malnutrition's effects across all ages and backgrounds, with early identification reducing health care costs, hospital readmissions, and complications. The section further (7) encourages the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services to implement the Malnutrition Care Score electronic clinical quality measure for adults over age 18; (8) acknowledges the importance of healthy food access and evidence-based nutrition standards for children in child care and schools; and (9) states that addressing malnutrition supports national goals for chronic disease prevention, healthy aging, and population health.
