This section expresses the sense of the Senate welcoming Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae to the United States and making 14 specified statements on the U.S.-Japan alliance, including (1) reaffirming the alliance's commitment to peace, security, and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific; (2) supporting alliance modernization to address security challenges; (3) applauding Japan's defense spending increase to 2% of GDP by March 31, 2026; (4) reaffirming U.S. defense commitments to Japan under Article V of the 1960 Treaty of Mutual Cooperation and Security, including applicability to the Senkaku Islands and opposition to unilateral changes in the East and South China Seas; (5) recognizing Japan's 2016 Legislation for Peace and Security; (6) noting convergence of national security strategies and the need to bolster Indo-Pacific deterrence; (7) supporting resolution of Japanese abductions by North Korea; (8) endorsing Japan's security cooperation with U.S. allies including South Korea, Australia, the Philippines, Taiwan, and India; (9) applauding advancements in specified trilateral, quadrilateral, and bilateral cooperation; (10) encouraging engagement in forums such as the Quad; (11) calling for cooperation on democratic values, rule of law, and human rights; and (12) committing to strengthen U.S.-Japan ties.
